Mission
We're hiring a hands-on Senior Construction Bookkeeper to own our QuickBooks Online general ledger, complete a detailed review and reconciliation of financial activity from 2025 forward, and maintain accurate, well-supported books on an accrual basis. This role requires someone who is driven, resourceful, and comfortable taking ownership without waiting for a task list. You'll need to spot issues, investigate them, follow through on the solution, and keep the work moving. We're looking for someone who has personally done complex accounting work—not just supervised it.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the general ledger in QuickBooks Online, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, and accruals.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, balance sheet accounts, and other financial activity. Investigate differences through to the source transaction.
- Review and reconcile activity from 2025 forward, making corrections with clear supporting documentation.
- Track project costs accurately and maintain reliable construction accounting records.
- Own the monthly close and prepare timely P&Ls, balance sheets, and other financial reports.
- Analyze financial statements and supporting documents to identify unusual balances, trends, and discrepancies. Investigate the cause and explain your findings to leadership.
- Keep records organized and supported so outside accountants or auditors can follow the work.
- Identify recurring errors or gaps in accounting processes and take the initiative to fix them.
- Use Google Sheets and approved AI tools to streamline analysis, organize information, and improve repeatable accounting workflows.
How we use AI
We want someone who is curious about better ways to work and has practical experience using AI. That could mean building a formula, comparing large sets of transactions, drafting a reconciliation procedure, or finding a faster way to flag unusual activity.
AI can help you investigate and organize the work, but you remain responsible for the accounting. You must verify outputs against source records, understand any entries you make, and use company-approved tools when working with financial or confidential information. We value someone who can recognize where AI is useful—and where it cannot be trusted to make the call.
Qualifications
- Strong, hands-on QuickBooks Online experience.
- Construction accounting and job costing experience.
- Working knowledge of accrual accounting and GAAP.
- The ability to read and analyze P&Ls, balance sheets, and other financial documents—and recognize when the numbers do not make sense.
- Experience personally resolving complex reconciliations and reviewing historical financial activity.
- Experience preparing books and supporting documentation for external accountants or auditors.
- Strong Google Workspace skills, especially Google Sheets.
- Practical experience using AI to improve your work, paired with the judgment to verify its output.
- Exceptional attention to detail and the willingness to investigate issues rather than make unsupported adjustments.
- A strong work ethic and a track record of independently driving difficult work to completion. You communicate obstacles early, bring proposed solutions, and follow through.
- Experience with solar, project funding, or accounting across multiple related companies is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Exceptional general ledger maintenance and complex reconciliation capabilities.
- Proven ability to clean up messy, incomplete, or historical accounting records independently.
- Strong skill in translating raw financial data into clear, intuitive reports for non-finance stakeholders.
- Process-oriented mindset focused on discovering operational inefficiencies and cash leaks rather than just recording transactions.
- Obsessive attention to detail and ability to work under tight recurring deadlines (weekly commission runs and monthly closes).
Technical Requirements
- Own PC or laptop with strong processing capabilities
- Reliable, high-speed internet connection (wired connection recommended)
- Noise-cancelling headset and a quiet, professional workspace
- Ability to operate securely with sensitive company data, systems, and software
